Updated: Jun 10, 2019

Date: Sunday, June 23, 2019

Time: 11:00 am

Location: Chris' Hale - 3372 Fort Independence Street, Bronx, NY 10463

Materials

  1. Scissors

  2. Tupperware big enough to store lei

  3. Raffia - Chris and I will provide, but will be good if you have your own if you plan to make a lot of lei. Small packet OK for now. Natural color. Real not paper.

  4. Old Newspaper to lay down.

  5. Bring your own plant material/flowers

Wili style lei can be used for many types of plant material. Most flowers, leaves and fruits including ones with with somewhat shorter and more brittle stems were also suitable for this technique.

Often plant material that would be harder to use in haku style can be used in wili style. Many people often use this style to make different and creative lei. Since this is the case I have included pictures of samples rather than listing plant material so you can figure out you would like to use. The first few samples are ones with plant material you often find at bodegas. The later ones are a bit fancier and more expensive, but included for possibilities.

Suggestions:

  • If this is your first time, use affordable flowers. 1-2 mix bouquets from your corner bodega is OK. No need to go overboard for first one. You would just want enough plant material to go around your head..

  • Baby's Breath, fern and other cheaper filler can be used for a more affordable lei po'o. Leaves on a bunch can be used as well.

  • If you have access, please feel free to pick your own. Make sure you check for bugs that can be pesky or a problem.

  • Do not use plant material that is too heavy and have very thick stems such as sunflowers, heliconia, or 'awapuhi.

  • Big can be ok as long and is light enough and can cut 2-3 inches with stem i.e. Lilies. Newbies should not use this at this at this time.

  • Although very delicate flowers can be used, for learning try to get ones that don't bruise easily or fall apart with a slight touch i.e. Cherry blossoms, dandelion puffs.
